Our Tournaments
Walton Heath has long been a stage for elite professional and amateur tournaments. The Club established one of the country’s leading match play championships, hosted the European Open throughout the 1970s and 1980s and welcomed arguably the greatest U.S. team in the 1981 Ryder Cup. Today the tradition continues with events such as the AIG Women's Open, U.S. Open Qualifying and the coveted Walton Heath Trophy.
The Walton Heath Trophy is a
premium elite amateur stroke play championship for men and women, run simultaneously – a rare format in elite amateur golf that reflects
equality and modern tournament values.
Played at its permanent home,
Walton Heath Golf Club, the championship is a
72-hole stroke play event contested across both the Old and New Courses (36 holes each), with
WAGR points available.

History & Pedigree
-
The event began life in 2005 as the South of England Open Amateur Championship before being relaunched in 2019 as The Walton Heath Trophy. In 2024, following Walton Heath’s hosting of the AIG Women’s Open, the women’s championship was introduced to run alongside the men.
- The men compete for the
Michael Lunt Salver, which incorporates an Eisenhower Trophy gold medal won by the late Michael Lunt as a member of the Great Britain & Ireland team in 1964. Michael was Captain of Walton Heath Golf Club (2005) and The R&A (2006), and one of the finest amateur golfers of his generation.
- The women compete for the
Jill Thornhill Rose. Jill Thornhill is a Curtis Cup player, British Amateur Champion, and current Walton Heath Golf Club President, playing a prominent role throughout the event, including prize giving.
- The championship has previously featured in the England Golf Order of Merit, and at one stage participation was considered essential for Walker Cup selection. Past winners include Ross McGowan, Gary Wolstenholme and Danny Willett.

U.S. OPEN QUALIFYING
Contested over 36 holes in a single day — one round on the Old Course and one on the New. With no prize money, only the reward of places in the U.S. Open, the result is often bold, attacking golf.
